The Pompadour Hairstyle – history
Judy Garland, being in the news again with the upcoming movie celebrating her life (played by Renee Zellweger) her ever trend-setting hairstyles come into focus too, one of them was the Pompadour. This ancient style would just not go away! Most people believe that it stems from the 50’s Rock styles like Elvis and many other stars, but its history goes back far beyond that!
The pompadour is a hairstyle named for Madame de Pompadour, a mistress of King Louis XV. Although there are numerous variations of the style for men, women, and children, the basic concept is hair swept upwards from the face and worn high over the forehead, and sometimes upswept around the sides and back as well.
After its initial popularity among fashionable women in the 18th century, the style was revived as part of the Gibson Girl look in the 1890s and continued to be in vogue until World War I. The style was in vogue for women once again in the 1940s.
The men’s version, as worn by existentialist Franz Kafka and early country and rock and roll stars such as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, was popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The style enjoyed yet another renaissance in the mid-2010s and variations of the pompadour style is now, yet again, seen everywhere. From the sublime to the ridiculous… “whatever blows your hair back!”

Wine
Creation Wines & FynArts
With its launch timed as a prelude to this year’s FynArts Festival, the anticipation surrounding Creation’s new ‘Story’ menu is mounting. And so is the excitement elicited by Nanette Ranger’s exquisite sculptures already gracing the Creation Fynbos Garden. Add to these the magical chords compiled by local sound designer Ivo Ivanov, and it becomes abundantly clear that you can look forward to an amazing sensory experience: ‘Integration at Creation’. https://www.creationwines.com/2019/fine-art-wine-culinary-art-fynbos/
